Learn Kannada The Easy and Fast way !!

Who am i

I am a house wife. My hobby is teaching and found intest in helping children and housewives learn kannada.

For Children

Kannada is a beautiful and versatile language .  Students find traditional ways of learning tough. Hence tend to hate learning the language.

I aim at teaching the child to read write and speak  Kannada and enjoy doing so. Here, children are motivated to learn Kannada at their own pace with

all the help and materials available in the environment. It is taught in a novel, easy and intresting way through play. Educational aids are used to enhance the

basic  skills in children and also make learning fun. I believe in creating an intrest and awakening  dorment skills in children which is the key to easy learning.

Each child is given personal and individual attention. Classes are held in evenings  on week days and in the morning on Saturdays.

Programme

Learning is fun here. Children enjoy learning and learn a lot without realising that they are studying. They learn to READ ,  WRITE and SPEAK  in a span of 2 - 2 1/2 years. The child is prepared to manage in school and outside , on his own after this  2 year programme. As children here are of different age groups , and are at different learning levels, each child gets the advantage of hearing and learning the other's learning. The child is not taught further unless he/she knows and understands what has already been taught.

We  start from the basics and I strongly believe that if the child is perfect in fundamentals, the rest flows easily. We start from the alphabets - Aksharas. It is not taught in the traditional way - starting from aa - gnya  - [ 1st and last alphabet. ] At no  time in our lives do we need to use them in that order of which first few letters are the most difficult ones with lot of curves for a small child or a beginer. So we start from the easiest and gradually go on to the more difficult ones.

We start with exercises for fingers and hand  which are used during writing.

'O' is called anuswara . There are 52 alphabets all together.

FOR EXAMPLE,

__ to "O" , anuswaara, we add talakattu  "    "    and it becomes "     "  [ra],    an alphabet.

__ to "     "  [ra]  we add   "  "    and it becomes "    "   [ii] ,    another alphabet.

__ rub the lower part of  "      "   and it becomes "      "  [ga] , another alphabet.

__ now, using these 3 alphabets, we make words and for each word, we learn the meaning and frame a sentence.

WORDS

1.          -now. [iiga]

2.            -Ranga. [name of a boy]

SENTENCES

1.         Kannada: Naanu iiga bande.                           NEW WORDS :  Naanu - I

                                                                                                         Bande - came

            English:   I came now.

 2.        Kan: Avana hesaru Ranga.                              NEW WORDS : Avana - his

                                                                                                         Hesaru - name.

            Eng: His name is Ranga.

So we learnt 4 more words in the process of making sentences. Likewise, we learn 2 or 3 letters every day and enrich our vocabilary while learning alphabets.

Later "Matras " are taughtand words and  sentences are made for each  "Matra "

Eg:1.  k + a = ka .            Matra here is  "          " .

k + aa = kaa .          Matra is  "           " .    Now, we learn words with "           "  matra and frame sentences for each word.  Eg:  Word :                          - paper . [kaagada]

Sentence : Ii kaagada haleyadu .  - This paper is old.

                                                       New words : Ii - This .

Hale - old. Etc., for each matra. There are 16 matras alltogether.

In the same way we learn " OTTU AKSHARAS "

 Eg:

kka is one ottu akshara . there are 34 ottu aksharas.

        ka + ka = kka .

       Word : "            "  -  elder sister . [akka]

       Sen : Avalu nanna akka.

                She is my elder sister.

New words : Avalu - she.

Nanna - my.  so on for each ottu akshara.

By now, children will have learnt more than 600 words and  many more in the process of framing sentences for each of 600 words. And another amazing thing here is that the new sentences and words multiply with the the number of children present and each child learns more. This way the child learns to read, write aswellas know the language. Coming to the speaking part, it is mostly interaction during the class with the teacher and other children .Every day each child is asked to frame 3 kannada sentences about how his/ her day was spent. And in this process each child gets to know 3 more sentences of every other child. This is the best way to impart training in conversational kannada.

At the end of every class children are asked to draw something of their choice and colour it. Later the meaning of that drawing is  taught .

Small kannada shlokas are taught.

Bhajans are taught. These bring home the lyrical beauty of sweet kannada - kannada kasturi.

Short stories are eitherreat or narrated.

We play games based and played in kannada.

Asked to recognise letters, words and sentences from a book.

Small articles about our environment, daily activities, nature, pollution, needs, facilities, etc., are read and made to read.

In addition, meanings of things listed below are taught as and when the child is ready.

NEAT and LEGIBLE HANDWRITING IS A NATURAL OUTCOME .

Now and then we go out to a park or a place of intrest and drawand colour things seen around for which meanings are taught. Children enjoy a lot and learn a lot . Children are asked to talk to strangers in kannada  and ask for directions  and things like that. Children have great  fun learning through play.

FEEDBACK FROM A PARENT.

Nikhil's mother.

Dr. Shoiba.

Being a non- Kannadiga, I wasquite anxious about my son's ability to cope with Kannada as his second language. I was hesitant to send him  for special classes as personal experience has taught me that nothing  destroys a love  for any subject than  tutions ! Imagine my surprise and delight when Nikhil started getting  8/10  and 20/25 in his Kannada work sheets where earlier he was getting 4/10 and 5/25. But more than the marks , he enjoys his Kannada classes with Gauri and is growing confident in using the language. Gauri's innovative way of teaching has been a majour  motivational factor for him.
